Srinagar-Leh NH reopens after clearing of snow

November 30, 2010 01:34 am | Updated 01:34 am IST - Srinagar:

The Srinagar-Leh National Highway, which was closed last week following heavy snowfall, was reopened on Monday to release vehicles stranded on either side of the Zojilla pass.

Snow clearance was completed on Sunday and vehicles from Kargil were allowed to move from the Zojilla pass, 107 km from here, towards Srinagar.

The divisional administration of Kashmir sought the help of the Border Roads Organisation — which maintains the only road link between the Ladakh region and rest of the State — in clearing the snow, officials said.

Passengers and vehicles stranded in Srinagar would be allowed to return to Kargil on Tuesday, weather permitting. No vehicle had been permitted on the Srinagar-Leh Highway since Wednesday.
