: East Delhi residents will now be able to apply for birth and death certificates online, with the local civic body planning on launching the facility within 10 days.

On Wednesday, after taking over as the Chairperson of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation’s Standing Committee, Jitendra Choudhary said that the online platform was ready.

Coming in 10 days

“We will start taking online applications within 10 days. This will save time for the about 12,000 applicants who line up outside our offices every month,” said Mr. Choudhary.

Mr. Choudhary, who started his year-long tenure as Standing Committee chairperson on Wednesday, said he would focus on improving sanitation in East Delhi and making the licensing mechanisms simpler.

“The Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be my focus. Also, we have several licences that make it difficult for people. We will try to simplify the processes,” said Mr. Choudhary.

He added that the recommendations of the Third Municipal Valuation Committee, which increase property tax for some categories of buildings, would be rejected.

He said the East Delhi Municipal Corporation had passed the proposal earlier as the Delhi government had made it a condition for giving funds, but the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled corporation did not agree with the proposal.
