The Congress will begin its campaign for 2012 Uttarakhand Assembly poll with an election rally at Gauchar in Chamoli district to be addressed by party president Sonia Gandhi on November nine.

During her visit to the State, Ms. Gandhi will also lay the foundation stone of the Rishikesh-Karanprayag rail project also on November nine, the State’s formation day.

“Party president Sonia Gandhi is arriving in Gauchar to lay the foundation stone of the Rishikesh rail project,” State Congress chief Yashpal Arya said.

He said the party’s election campaign for the State Assembly poll in February next year would get a boost with Ms. Gandhi’s visit.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister B. C. Khanduri along with other BJP leaders criticised the Congress for not inviting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the Rishikesh-Karanprayag rail line project.

“It would have been better if the Congress had invited the Prime Minister for the foundation-laying ceremony,” Bhagat Singh Koshiyari, heading the BJP State election campaign committee, said.
