Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday said her party was not engaged in a game of polarisation of votes.

Ms. Gandhi was speaking to reporters after filing her nomination papers here.

She was asked about her meeting with Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid Syed Ahmed Bukhari at her residence in Delhi on Tuesday.

Ms. Gandhi, who declared assets worth Rs. 2.8 crore, was accompanied by her son and party vice-president Rahul Gandhi. “I have a special bond with Rae Bareli. The people have adopted me with affection. I hope all will be well and Rae Bareli will make me victorious again,” she said.

Ms. Gandhi’s daughter, Priyanka Vadra, was expected to join the two in Rae Bareli. However, U.P. Congress vice-president Satya Dev Tripathi said: “she [Priyanka] could not make it due to health reasons.”

Before the filing of the nomination, Mr. Gandhi drove his mother to the district party office where she performed a “havan.”
