The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), on instructions from the Home Ministry, on Friday withdrew its order, which it issued earlier in the day, banning the SMS (Short Message Service) service in Jammu and Kashmir.

The DoT had asked all mobile service providers, including the State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.to ban the SMS facility on post-paid connections and restrict the service for pre-paid users to 10 messages per day per subscriber in view of security concerns.

However, the Jammu and Kashmir government reacted strongly and asked the Ministry to intervene. The State government termed the move “unnecessary harassment.”
