Six crib deaths took place in government-run Malda Medical College Hospital since Wednesday, hospital superintendent and the college vice-principal M. A. Rashid said on Thursday.

While four of the six infants were newborns, the other two were within two months of age. One of them was already undergoing treatment at the hospital, while the rest were admitted in critical condition.

All the six infants were underweight and were suffering from breathing problems and infection, Mr. Rashid said.

The hospital, which caters to the north Bengal districts as well as neighbouring Bihar, has witnessed crib deaths several times in the past and as many as 16 infants died there in a span of 16 hours recently.
