Six children, including two girls, died in two mishaps in Ganjam district of Odisha.
Four of them died when the wall of a dilapidated earthen house collapsed on them at Kalajamuna village under Rambha police station limits on Monday morning.
Bodies of two other children drowned in Dhoba bandha pond at Jagabandhu street of Berhampur were recovered on Monday morning.
According to police sources, the children were bathing at a tubewell at Kalajamuna village at around 7.45 a.m. when the wall of an adjacent dilapidated house collapsed on them. Two girls Sravani Mali (7) and Nandini Mali (6) died at the spot. The two injured boys were rushed to hospitals. Seshadev Mali (4) died in Chatrapur hospital while Sandip Sahu (4) died in MKCG medical college and hospital in Berhampur. As per villagers, this house belonged to one Purushottam Mali, who had recently received work order to get a pucca house constructed under Indira Awas Yojana (IAY). So, his family members were dismantling the thatched roof of their old house when the mishap occurred. The wall is said to have weakened due to recent rains.
Bodies recovered from the pond in Berhampur were identified as of Mangalu Sahu (14) and S. Sagar Patra (14). Both of them were from Krishnampeta street of the city and were missing since Sunday. It was suspected that both had gone to bathe in this deep pond and had drowned.
