Situation normal in violence-hit Agartala

August 25, 2016 02:38 am | Updated November 17, 2021 02:30 am IST - Agartala:

The situation is fast returning to normal in Agartala after Tuesday’s violence during a rally of the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT). Assam Rifles, Border Security Force and Tripura State Rifles personnel are manning security in the city where Section 144 prohibitory order is enforced for three days.

Thirty people were injured, dozens of vehicles put on fire and properties damaged during clashes between supporters of the IPFT and non-tribal city dwellers.

The IPFT held the rally to push its demand for creation of a separate State for 33 per cent minority tribal population.

West Tripura District Magistrate Milind Ramteke on Wednesday said the situation was under control and security arrangements were in place.

He appealed to the media to refrain from publishing and broadcasting provocative news and photographs and support efforts of the administration to restore complete normalcy.

Action demanded

The Upajati Gana Mukti Parishad, the tribal front of the ruling CPI(M), demanded action against the IPFT leadership for ‘instigating violence in the city’.
