Three persons, including a sub-inspector, were shot dead in a village near here late on Tuesday, over a 30-year-old land dispute. Three with gunshot wounds were hospitalised, with one of them in a serious condition.

The deceased were identified as sub-inspector Kapil Muni (55), his nephew Santosh Mishra (20) and Shiv Babu (38) of the Kakra Dubawal village of Sarai Inayat area, east of the Ganga, police said.

Station house officer Mahesh Pandey said post-mortem reports would ascertain whether all the three died of bullet wounds. According to sources, Muni, who was working with the Wireless Department of the Madhya Pradesh Police, was embroiled in a dispute over “a small plot of land” with Shiv Babu and Ram Babu of the same village.

On Tuesday, while Muni and Santosh were returning to their village on a motorcycle, they were intercepted by Shiv Babu and a group of men leading to a heated argument.

Later, Babu and a group of men approached Muni again, leading to an altercation that soon turned into a shootout with firing from both sides, leaving Muni and Babu dead on the spot.
