Shutdown total in Kashmir Valley

February 28, 2016 02:59 am | Updated 02:59 am IST - Srinagar:

A complete shutdown was observed in the Kashmir Valley and parts of the Chenab Valley on Saturday in protest against the police action on students of JNU and former Professor S.A.R. Geelani.

Business centres, offices, petrol pumps, banks and varsities remained closed following a shutdown call issued by separatists Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Yasin Malik and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. The authorities placed Mr. Malik under house arrest to prevent a rally. “Ex-Home Minister P. Chidambaram, whose party hanged Afzal Guru, confesses that he was not given a fair trial. But when people like S.A.R. Geelani and others spoke about this, they were termed as traitors,” Mr. Malik said.
