Show-cause notice to TMC, CPI(M) leaders

Show-cause notice has been issued to Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal and MLA of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Anisur Rahaman on the directions of the Election Commission of India, it was learnt from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, West Bengal, here on Thursday.

While sub-divisional officer (SDO) of Rampurhat in West Bengal’s Birbhum district slapped show-cause notice on Mr. Rahaman for using “unparliamentary language” during an election meeting in the district, a similar notice has been served on Mr. Mondal by the SDO in Labhpur in the same district for inciting party workers against the Opposition.

Mr. Rahaman, a MLA from Domkal in Murshidabad constituency, had indulged in personal criticism of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The Trinamool Congress district president of Bribhum, Mr. Mondal, had compared those in the Opposition to rodents.

Asked about action against Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy, who allegedly incited party workers to capture polling booths, officials of the Commission said that it has received the report from the District Magistrate in North 24 Parganas.

In connection with another controversy involving actor Dev where the Trinamool Congress candidate had likened the euphoria in the elections surrounding him to “being raped”, the Election Commission has “sought evidence in the form of the audio recording of the interview from the media house”.

Mr. Dev’s comments were published in a Bengali tabloid earlier this week.

Liquor seizure doubled

Meanwhile, the seizure of illicit liquor by the State’s excise department during the month in West Bengal has “more than doubled” compared to last year, officials said. “Last year, 88, 797 litres of liquor were seized while during the same period this year, the quantity is 1,61, 462 litres,” assistant chief electoral officer Amitjyoti Bhattacharji told journalists.
