Ship with hazardous cargo catches fire off Mumbai coast

September 10, 2012 01:31 am | Updated 01:31 am IST - Mumbai:

A major fire broke out in m.v. Amsterdam Bridge off the Mumbai coast on Sunday, Coast Guard officials said.

The ship reached just four nautical miles from Prongs Reef Lighthouse in south Mumbai and was carrying hazardous cargo, the sources said.

Sources said the operations room of the Coast Guard received a fire call at 5.15 p.m. from the captain of Antigua and Barbuda-flagged vessel.

Though only two ships — ICGS Samudra Prahari and ICGS Subhadra Kumari Chouhan — were initially sent to contain the fire, later two more ships — ICGS Sankalp and ICGS Sangram — were pressed into fire-fighting.

The crew of the 54,405-tonne vessel is believed to be safe.
