Seven pilgrims were killed and more than 20 critically injured when a tourist bus, on its way to Kalighat in Kolkata, capsized on National Highway 2 at Gurap in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Sunday.
The district administration has been asked to provide medical assistance to the injured and ensure their return home.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, currently in New Delhi, reportedly inquired into the incident.
According to District Magistrate Sripriya Rengarajan, over 30 pilgrims from Bihar’s Vaishali district were on the bus.
“They were on a tour of religious places, had visited the Basukinath temple in Jharkhand and on their way to Kalighat,” she said.
“The accident occurred when the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned. Rescue operations started immediately as the local people informed the authorities, Ms. Rengarajan said.
Nine injured persons, some of them serious, were admitted in the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital.
