Seven persons were killed and four others injured when the jeep in which they were travelling fell into a gorge on Monday at Kafaligar area of Bageshwar district, police said.

The jeep was carrying 11 passengers from Haldwani to Bageshwar on Monday when it fell into a 100-feet deep gorge killing five persons on the spot, police said, adding two others died during treatment.

Police said that the injured have been admitted to Bageshwar district hospital where their condition is stated to be serious.

Prima facie it seems that the driver of the jeep might have dozed off causing the accident, police said.

A magisterial probe has been ordered in to the accident, the District Magistrate said, adding that proper compensation would be provided to the kin of the deceased and the injured.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat expressed condolences to the victims of the accident and prayed for early recovery of those injured.
