The All India Confederation of SC/ST Organisations on Monday filed a plea before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court in Patna seeking to charge sociologist Ashis Nandy with sedition for his remarks at the Jaipur Literature Festival.

The petition calls for registration of a case under the Indian Penal Code sections 124A (sedition), 153 (a) and (b) related to promoting and various sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The petitioner, Sadanand Paswan, an advocate, stated in the petition that the police refused to register a case against Mr. Nandy at the behest of the Confederation, which is why the body had approached the court.

“The court has admitted the petition and taken cognizance of it. Instead of directing the complaint to the police, the court has decided to hear the plea. The hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday,” Mr. Narendra Kumar of the Confederation told The Hindu .
