The Maharashtra Police have intensified security following an Intelligence alert of a possible terror strike in the State by a group of six SIMI men, five of them being escapees from the Khandwa jail in October last year.
The alert says the group has been assigned to carry out strikes in Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Karnataka.
“Mumbai remains a target of the terrorists and, therefore, we have intensified our security drive across the city. Patrolling has been intensified, and we want to ensure that there is enough police presence on the streets to deter anti-social elements,” Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime, Dhananjay Kulkarni told presspersons here on Wednesday.
The Intelligence input says six escaped under-trials — Aijajuddeen, Aslam, Amjad Khan, Zakir Hussan and Mehboob Guddu and Salik, alias Sallu — are planning to unleash terror on ISI directives.
The security agencies last spotted them in Karnataka and suspect that they have entered Maharashtra.
The police have started searches at lodges and hotels across the State.
“An alert has been sounded across the State, especially in Nagpur, Pune, Beed and Nashik,” a police officer told The Hindu .
‘Close watch’The State’s Anti Terrorism Squad has formed special teams to carry out more searches.
“Searches have been intensified in SIMI-dominated pockets of Beed, Jalgaon and Ahmednagar. We are also conducting inquiries and keeping a close watch on people associated with the banned organisation,” the officer said.
