A 32-year-old security guard was arrested by the Mumbai police on Friday for raping a 25-year-old resident of the building he guarded, police said.
According to the police, around 2.30 am on Friday morning, the victim, a resident of a housing society in Powai in central Mumbai, was dropped outside her building gate by her friends and two security guards, including the accused, saw the victim enter the building.
The accused, identified as Pramod Upadhyay, followed the victim on the pretext of helping her reach her flat located on the third floor, and sexually assaulted her in the lobby of the third floor. The victim was found lying on the floor by her brother a few hours later, early on Friday. The family took her to a nearby hospital and a complaint was lodged with the local police. The preliminary medical examination has ascertained that the victim was sexually assaulted.
The accused was nabbed as he was inconsistent with his statement when questioned. During the course of the interrogation he confessed to the crime, the police said.
He has been booked for rape and robbery as the victim's mobile phone and handbag are missing, the police said.
