Rupam Pathak, school teacher and prime accused in the murder of BJP legislator Raj Kishore Keshri, on Tuesday was awarded life imprisonment by a special CBI court. She was convicted a week ago.
“I think this verdict serves the purpose of justice,” said designated CBI Judge Mr. V.N. Singh while pronouncing the sentence.
Ms. Pathak's mother Kumud told journalists that they would appeal against the verdict in the Patna High Court. “The CBI court should have had some consideration for my daughter's emotional state when she stabbed the legislator [Keshri]. She was consistently exploited [sexually] and emotionally traumatised by Keshri and his associate… this prompted her to take the extreme step.”
The High Court rejected Ms. Pathak's bail application in September last.
Keshri, legislator from Purnea district, was stabbed by Ms. Pathak at his residence early last year.
Ms. Pathak, principal of a local school, had alleged consistent sexual misconduct by Keshri and his aide, Bipin Rai.
