Rupam Pathak, school teacher and prime accused in the murder of BJP legislator Raj Kishore Keshri, on Tuesday was awarded life imprisonment by a special CBI court. She was convicted a week ago.
“I think this verdict serves the purpose of justice,” said designated CBI Judge Mr. V.N. Singh while pronouncing the sentence.
Ms. Pathak's mother Kumud told journalists that they would appeal against the verdict in the Patna High Court. “The CBI court should have had some consideration for my daughter's emotional state when she stabbed the legislator [Keshri]. She was consistently exploited [sexually] and emotionally traumatised by Keshri and his associate… this prompted her to take the extreme step.”
The High Court rejected Ms. Pathak's bail application in September last.
Keshri, legislator from Purnea district, was stabbed by Ms. Pathak at his residence early last year.
Ms. Pathak, principal of a local school, had alleged consistent sexual misconduct by Keshri and his aide, Bipin Rai.

I am sure the judge must have been bribed. That's another scam in the making, i suppose.
Bravo ... result in 1 yr ...How about cases against Raja Bhaia ( UP) .. how about cases against Laloo prashad yadav .. cases against so many politicians .. they never see day light.... Bravo Indian Judiciary system ..
justice have done their duty..if we ask their conscience it will tel the truth
It is surprising the Modi is exonerated, while Rupam Pathak is found guilty. If you kill thousands without a reason, people who have not harmed you in any way, that is acceptable. If you lash out under extreme torture, and destroy your torturer, that gets the sentence of life!
Sad to see this. Clearly goes to show that laws are not equal. I personally am aware of a case where a customs officer was brutally murdered in front of his wife and kids and the murderers are scot-free.
The worst thing is not she being sentenced for life, but she leaving Bipin Rai alive and to all commentators: buddies our system is designed for powerful and richmen, so if you want justice it is your business to get it done.
IF the MLA action of having sexual harrasment on the school teacher,is prooved, a lesser punishment of Jail term for 5/7 years looks vvery reasoinable, and she can now appeal for clemency of the situation under which she has to exert herself from the treatment of the MLA.
What is Judiciary ? it is the system of courts that interprets and applies the law in the name of the state (ref: wiki)
okay so what is state ? it is an organized political community (ref: wiki)
so I guess we have our answers.
The MLA,the minister,the police,the public prosecuter,and the judges
are not for this lady;they are protecting the rapists, thieves, and
gubdas.I am telling you this country need a iron man to protect the
women, children, the innocents from these rascals. Please wake up the
country,we a need a national movement against these idiots. Enough is
enough.
I expected better from The Hindu. Instead of just providing the news,
they should have published the background behind the murder so that
people realize an innocent is being punished for taking law in her hand
when the entire state machinery had failed.
why law is so emotionless ?..she should be honored to live to her dignity and self respect
but cases are just decided based on evidences...
judiciary is simply incompetent.
Doesn't our judiciary system has double standards?????????????
A common man kills an MLA to protect her dignity and is slapped with
life imprisonment and is thrown behind the bars whereas Shibu Soren, an
MP, kills his PA in order to hide his wrong deeds, is moving around
freely that too with all kind of security cover..
The fact is that our system becomes a toothless tiger when it comes
about nabbing the politicians.
Brave lady....I salute you. U give a lesson to all MLA/MP's that even they are powerful but they have to fear.

Biggest reason for leaving beloved Bharat.
From "Hindu" we readers expect a much better reporting.
A woman dares to stab a MLA in public surely must have been well aware
that her action meant certain death for herself too.
"The Hindu" should have had brought the other side of the coin too...
A sad day in the history of Indian Judiciary. SIT doesn't find any evidence against
Modi for the pogrom where thousands of innocent people died and here is a person
getting life sentence whose action can be called "justifiable" under the
circumstances. Sad indeed!
Law must prevail. She took the law in her hand so she must be punished. But we must understand this fact that there are numerous important questions related to this incident have not been answered or addressed. Why any woman like Pathak kill a man who was sitting MLA? There must be very strong reason for taking such a fatal decision to Kill someone.
These types of incidents highlights the weakness in our system which is existing since the birth of our country. To eradicate these types of weaknesses in our system, we need to strenth people like Anna and his team.
we cannot rely on indian system, cbi solved this case within a year ,but
why our system has failed to sentence corrupt leader or MP, MLA . only
innocent or comman man suffer in indian system.
Your report does not mention if there were mitigating circumsances, but your comments pages indicate that there was a subtantial issue, that the killer was a victim of rape by the MLA, that was ignored by the court. If that is indeed the case, the verdict sends the wrong signal to the sexual perverts amongst the politically powerful.
Truth cannot triumph in our largest democracy, what a sad day...
A crime is a crime. But when the circumstances which have led to the crime is considered, I feel ashamed of the politicians and the judiciary dancing to the tune of it. It is clearfrom the facts and circumstances of the case that was no MENSREA.
We reapply appreciate the early judgement given on this case. But at the same time, if it relates to a VIP or a politician, the case is running into 10 - 15 years and after that they will declare there is no evidence and the case dismissed or in some cases they will change the enquiry officer again and again as political convenience.
We wish, if our judiciary can conclude all cases irrespective of the person;s status involved, so that the public can have faith on it.
Although she committed crime in order to save her daughter’s life but it seems that
she can no longer protect her by being behind bars. Perhaps that was the intention
and thats why the action by CBI was taken so quickly so that the relatives of MLA can
now easily play with daughter. Brilliant! This only proves that CBI is also a puppet of
government.
What a mockery! I am astonished to see how quickly the ever failing CBI and our ever delaying Judicial Court was able to investigate and punish Rupam Pathak! These institutions work efficiently only for the Politicians!
Since Sonia congress was not able to make corruption in this case, so the court gave judgement very early....much early than Afzal guru & other terrorist who raped & killed the innocent people... The CBI has raped the comman man from this judgement....
This is classic example of corrupt lower judiciary.Given good media coverage Rupam Pathak would be able to take the case to next round in High Court. The Hindu, please provide more visibility to this case.
What a country we are living in!! Negative news from all directions. There is not a single government machinery on which I have an iota of trust. Only rich and powerful can survive in this country, rest are third class citizens running after limited resources.
The judgement is extremely harsh and outrageous. Shakes our faith on the judiciary. I earnestly hope The Hindu would help the "victim" by mobilising support.
This type of politician should not kept alive.
Whatever she did is the correct.
In country like India correption is so increased that you cann't trust on anyone.
Who is the judge and advocate in this case
Thats so nice of the judgement was given by the court for this case very
soon. But what about the other one which is coming from an year ago.
I believed the case has influenced by some high level politician in
order to proclaim the maximum punishment; she is 1st offender AND i
anticipate she could not kill the respective MLA without any reason
and the reason would be so strong that she herself not able to control
her without killing the MLA Rajkishore Keshri. This is very ironical
when a common man became a victim of this kind of heinous crime; it
takes year to get the verdict. Rupam should challenge this verdict in
the High Court as it does not seems tenable from a rationality. Why
She get maximum punishment?? I would recommend that there should be a
commission on this to prevail the truth about this case. A typical
Indian lady; she cant stabbed a reputed and valued MLA without any
reason.
Please i plead the court to work with mind and heart not with papers and false proofs infornt of them. CBI please work for the people not for the leaders and lobbyists and make our country a place to leave without fear and with confidence and trust on judiciary system that there are some to help them at time of need.
Judiciary System Wake up and punish the dreadful leaders first!!!!
This incident just goes to reiterate the fact that I have completely lost faith in the Indian judiciary system
it proves law is brutal for helpless common man, and not for MLAs and MPs.
This is a mockery of justice just as much as a murderer walks away a free man.
The police and the policy makers dont protect the lay people in this country and when the people take it upon themselves to deal with others who harass them they get punished !! Indian justice system is a joke in these cases.
This comment is for 'The Hindu'.
If you have given an option of editing the comments on your article
that means you must be having certain intentions behind that.
You know that we/I leave a mail id along with this comment. So can you
people reply back to me on what will be your action or intention?
You must have read so many replies that readers have made here. All
most all have same opinion that 'why justice was delayed when in
deciding when case was booked against MLA and how come justice made so
soon on a common man'
Another truth is we can not rely on our system. Innocent or common man
always suffers in Indian system.
Question is; How you guys can help to this? You are media people. So
can you people start some regular protests like what 'Anna Hazare'
did?
Can you guys (media people) take a responsibility of mass movement?
Or you guys only focus on your revenue? Or you focus on how well you
can sell your news?
You can write to my ID if possible. Thanks.
It is more of shame than feeling proud. A school teacher principal molested by MLA took the extreme step to save her dignity. And the CM was quick to order CBI probe (which is generally avoided when own men are at fault) & CBI was quick to solve a very open murder case. There should be a principle of "justifiable homicide". What else a helpless woman can do to save her dignity when entire state machinery is against her?
Rupam Pathak should not punished with life imprisonment. Please consider her motive behind killing an MLA. She just saved her daughter's life.
how come this judgment came in an year when there are bunch of
corruption cases in probation eternally?
Great work....our courts and CBI managed to close the case within four months of the killing itself! Now shall we open all the millions of cases which go the other way around? That is, cases on politicians killing regular people?
I request the Hindu to dig deeper in this story, if she would have not killed the MLA, was there a possibility of her becoming a victim, like Bhanwari Devi.
Are the ministers and MLAs able to exploit the women school teachers and nurses of govt payrolls, using transfers and promotions.
The guilty should be punished appropriately.
But should also take into account the conditions(or intentions behind)
under which the crime was committed.
When the governance machinery fails - People would be forced to take law into their own hands -the most unpleasant state.
Unless, the rule of law is established, cradle of civilization itself, would need outside help.
People holding public office, need to be tutored about law - Fast track investigation and verdict are necessity of today.
CBI solved this case in just over 1 year. It is certainly remarkable achievement. But, what happens to the same CBI when they look into cases of corruption charges against big leaders, corporates, etc
How come so early judgement ? It should take atleast 30 to get
judgement.Look still Bhophal gas victim has not got judgment after 28
years.
I am depressed after getting this news. Here our court is not able to give any sentence to that rapist MLA even after 3 years of the rape before she had to withdraw the case due to various pressures and the same court takes no time to convict her of murder charges.
Certainly, this decision will make us loose the faith in our judiciary.
