Expressing dissatisfaction over the probe done by the Uttar Pradesh Police in a case of murder, allegedly committed by a man who is also an accused in a Muzaffarnagar riots case, the Supreme Court on Friday handed over the investigation to the CBI.

A Bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra handed over the probe to the Central agency after it was informed that the police have not been able to arrest the main accused in the case, Praveen alias Billu.

The court passed the order on a petition filed by Suresh Pal, whose daughter was allegedly killed by Praveen on a canal dispute.

Advocate Kamini Jiswal, appearing for the petitioner, submitted that the local police was not probing the case properly and was not trying to arrest Praveen.

The court, after hearing her plea, handed over the probe in the case to the CBI.

After being handed the investigation by the Supreme Court, CBI said it would soon begin its probe.
