The statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a dream project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is expected to be ready in four years. The State government on Monday issued the work order for building the 182-metre Statue of Unity, touted to be the tallest in the world, to engineering firm Larsen & Toubro (L&T).

The construction contract for the project, spread over 20,000 square metres in Kevadia, Narmada district, is worth Rs. 2,989 crore. The first phase includes the statue itself, a memorial garden, a connecting bridge, visitors’ centre, underwater aquarium, and a hotel and convention centre.

The second phase envisages development of the surrounding area through the construction of education institutions and allied infrastructure. In the last budget, the Central government allocated Rs. 200 crore for the statue.
