Actor Sanjay Dutt, convicted in the 1993 Bombay bomb blasts case, returned to Pune’s Yerwada jail on Wednesday morning at the end of 30 days of furlough (leave from the jail).
However, the parole application of 70-year-old Zaibunissa Kazi, also convicted in the same case, was rejected.
Kazi had applied for parole in July to visit her ailing mother, an Alzheimer’s patient.
On Monday Kazi’s family received a letter from Prabhakar Deshmukh, Divisional Commissioner of Pune, turning down her request.
The family is planning to reapply.
“The actor who is young was granted leave. But an old lady was rejected leave on the ground that she might run away. It doesn’t make sense to me,” Ms. Kazi’s relative who did not want to be named told TheHindu.
Mr. Deshmukh told TheHindu that police and jail authorities submitted a negative report when their opinion was sought. “So the application was rejected.”
Both Dutt and Kazi were convicted of hoarding illegal weapons and sentenced to five years in jail.
Kazi was convicted under the anti-terror law TADA, while Dutt was held guilty under the much lenient Arms Acts.
Kazi has served eight months of her term and is presently lodged at Yerwada jail.
