Bharatiya Janata Party MP Sakshi Maharaj triggered a fresh controversy after a video, purportedly showing him asking a young woman to unbutton her jeans so that she could reveal the wounds suffered by her during a recent police raid at her house, went viral.
‘Baseless allegation’In the video, whose authenticity cannot be verified, the BJP leader is shown sitting on a chair, surrounded by a group of people, while a young woman is egged on to unbutton her jeans and show wounds suffered by her in the abdomen. While the visuals created outrage on social media, Mr. Maharaj termed the allegation “baseless.”
He blamed the controversy on media persons filming the incident and said it was at their behest that the woman unbuttoned her pants. “I asked her to stop and said there was no need for her to show her wounds. The media people insisted she reveal her wounds. The moment that happened, I stood up … she is like my daughter. You can see the video for yourself,” the BJP MP from Unnao told The Hindu .
In another development, the controversial leader has been booked for threatening to shoot the police, while he was addressing a rally in the Fardpur area of Mainpuri on Tuesday. A case was registered against him at the Bicchwa police station in Mainpuri.
On May 3, the MP had gone to the house of a BJP worker. The house had been raided by the police on April 30 on suspicion that spurious liquor trade was on there. “The police entered the house without warrant. They misbehaved with the women and molested them,” Mr. Maharaj alleged.
‘Threatens’ policeAn FIR was lodged against the MP after he allegedly threatened the police. Mr. Maharaj was charged for saying the police would have to face bullets, if they conducted any more raids at the said BJP worker’s house.
