Taking cognisance of complaints and media reports regarding several cases of ragging at a Sainik school in Koderma district of Jharkhand, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has asked the Ministry of Defence to take necessary action in the matter and send a factual report within a stipulated timeframe.
According to reports, several complaints of severe ragging have been reported in the recent past from a Sainik school in Jhumri Tilaiya in Koderma which provoked one of the victims to attempt suicide while three others reportedly left the school.
In a recent complaint received by the child rights body, one student had attempted suicide after being repeatedly “ragged” by the seniors in the school while another student — enrolled in class VII — had been “ragged” by senior students since his admission. Another boy was reportedly forced to do 500 push-ups by some older boys that forced him to quit studies and is back to his hometown in Ranchi working in his father’s tea stall.
Media reports also revealed that two of his friends had also left school as they could not cope with the menace. Condemning the incidents, the Central body has asked the Defence Ministry to send a factual report along with authenticated copies of the relevant documents within a stipulated timeframe.
