Sabha for imposition of mother tongue dialect in schools in Assam

March 14, 2010 03:02 pm | Updated 03:02 pm IST - Guwahati

Peeved over non-implementation of the central Education policy to include local language in the schools curriculum, the Asom Sahitya Sabha, the apex literary body of Assam, has called for stringent action against the educational educations flouting such norms.

Sources in the Sabha said that there were several schools, mostly in the private sector, which have so far not included the language spoken as mother tongue in the curriculum.

Calling for stringent action against such schools, the literary body stressed that the central policy makes it mandatory for the schools to have the provision of teaching the mother tongue if there were at least 20 per cent students speaking that particular language.

Though other states of the country have adopted the policy, in Assam it was not implemented fully, the sources said and called on the government to take punitive measures against such schools.

The Sabha, sources said, was also contemplating to take legal action if necessary to ensure that the local language was given prominence.
