Sabapathy to be Speaker of Puducherry Assembly

Ruling All India N.R. Congress member V. Sabapathy alias Kothandaraman is all set to become the 18th Speaker of the territorial Assembly. He was the lone member in the Assembly to submit nomination for the post of Speaker, on Tuesday. The election for the post is slated to be held on Wednesday.

Secretary of the Legislative Assembly M. Sivaprakasam told The Hindu that there was no other nomination being filed. A total of six nominations, including the one by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, were presented proposing the name of Mr. Sabapathy. Pro tem Speaker T. Thiagarajan would formally announce the election of Mr. Sabapathy on the floor of the Assembly on Wednesday, the secretary said.

All members belonging to the AINRC and Independent member representing Neravy T.R. Pattinam V.M.C. Sivakumar, on whose support Mr. Rangasamy formed the government, were present.

Later talking to reporters, Mr. Rangasamy said he was pleased to know that the Opposition parties were not putting up any candidate. He thanked the parties for ensuring that the Speaker was elected unopposed.
