Rural polls will be held, says WB Election Commissioner

June 27, 2013 02:03 am | Updated November 16, 2021 08:35 pm IST - KOLKATA:

Rural polls in 17 districts of the State will be held, though there may be some revision in the election schedule, the State Election Commissioner, Mira Pande, said here on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, the election panel moved the Supreme Court on the matter of availability of security forces for the panchayat elections.

According to an order of the Calcutta High Court on May 14, the elections are to be held before July 15. As of now, the polls are scheduled for July 2, 6 and 9. “We want that the availability of security forces is ensured. [Otherwise,] what is the security we can give to the electorate?” Ms. Pande said, when journalists asked whether the polls would be held amid the on-going stalemate involving the election panel and the State on matters pertaining to security.
