Hundreds of Republican Party of India (Athavale) supporters were detained during their attempt to stage coordinated rasta rokos and rail rokos, in various parts of Mumbai, on Monday morning. They were demanding provision of Indu Mills land to build a memorial for Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Nisar Tamboli, told The Hindu that the police detained around 250 workers in the city. Outside suburban Borivali station, some workers were detained before they could stop the train. They shouted slogans, criticising the Centre for the delay in releasing all the 12 acres of mill land for the memorial.
Workers were detained under the Mumbai Police Act in Borivali, Kandivali, Andheri, Goregaon, Chembur, Bhandup, Mulund, Mankhurd and Nagpada. “Mr. Athavale's instructions to State party workers are to keep protesting till the National Textile Corporation releases the land,” a spokesperson said.
