The charge of sexual harassment made against a teacher of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU) in Lucknow by a trainee nurse has snowballed into a controversy with the allegations that the case was being hushed up by the police.

The doctor, Krishna Kant Singh of the Surgery Department in CSMMU, and his brother, Kamla Kant Singh, were arrested by the police on Sunday following a complaint lodged by a trainee nurse, Satyabhama Singh, with the Wazirganj police station. Both were reportedly bailed out in the police station late on Sunday night.

In her complaint, Ms. Singh alleged that Dr. Singh, Kamla Kant Singh, Kunwar Kant Singh, KM Singh, who is a former Vice Chancellor of CSMMU, and Ramji Bajpai were running a sex racket in the KK Hospital of Nursing Institute here. The complainant alleged that degrees were given only after the trainees agreed to their demands. The KK Hospital is a private institute.

Ms. Singh alleged that the PRO of the institute, Ramji Bajpai and the Director of the institute, Kamla Kant Singh demanded sexual favours from her in return of making a provision for her to appear in the third year examination of the nursing diploma course. She added that Dr. KM Singh did not take any action when she complained to him.

The Additional Director General of Police, (Law and Order ), Brij Lal said here on Monday that he had no information of the two accused having being released on bail on Sunday night itself. Reports said that Dr. Singh and his brother were released on “health grounds.”

Following the trainee nurse’s complaint, the police registered a case under Sections 294, 506 and 509 of the Indian Penal Code. Efforts were underway to arrest the other accused, Mr. Lal said. Ms. Singh from Sultanpur district had joined the three and half years nursing diploma course in 2005.

Dr. K.K Singh, Kamla Kant Singh and Kunwar Kant Singh are the sons of Dr. K.M Singh, who was the Vice Chancellor of the Medical University in 2003.
