Rousing welcome for Mary Kom

World women boxing champion M.C. Mary Kom along with folk artises during a reception organised in her honour at Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium in Imphal on Saturday.

The people and the government of Manipur gave a rousing welcome to M.C. Mary Kom, the five-time world boxing champion, when she arrived here on Saturday.

During the reception function held at the Khuman Lampak sports complex, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh gave her Rs. 10 lakh and announced that Ms. Kom was being promoted as the Additional Superintendent of Police. She was recruited to the police department in recognition of her contribution to sports. He further said that Ms. Kom would be given two acres of land, where she planned to start a sports academy. Ms. Kom had announced her plan to train the promising youngsters in the academy.

The Manipur government declared a half holiday on Saturday to enable employees to attend the reception.
