Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal will have a new post graduate course from next academic session.
Prof S. Sekharjit, Director, RIMS disclosed this on Monday while welcoming the new nursing students coming from the 7 northeastern states excluding Assam. He said that the course could have been opened from this year’s session itself if hadn’t been for some delay due to official rigmarole.
He added that since there is a central medical college on the campus the nursing students will have quality education.
Prof N. Damayanti, head of Anatomy who is the adviser to the nursing college said that the nursing classes are being held at the old dilapidated building where the first classes of MBBS were started 42 years ago. Though the number of MBBS and PG students had been increased to accommodate all India quota students there is no proportionate increase of the number of teaching faculties. She also added that later, some of the students will also be getting admission in RIMS Dental College.
There is an acute shortage of hostel accommodation for the nursing students since the construction has not been completed. Presently, the new nursing students will have to adjust in the hostel of the MBBS students who will be vacating shortly.
The intake capacity of nursing students each year from the 7 NE states is around 50. There are students from other states except Meghalaya and Nagaland who have joined classes from August 1. Being the host state Manipur gets 20 seats out of which 5 are for the children of the RIMS employees. Each of the remaining NE states gets 5 seats.
College of Nursing has come as a boon to the students of the northeast who want to undergo studies in nursing course. Earlier they had to spend a fortune by going to private nursing colleges in other places, particularly in Bangalore. Nursing students just have to spend nominal amounts for the 4 year course in RIMS.
