February 08, 2016 11:34 pm | Updated 11:34 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Shahi Imam of the Jama Masjid met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence on Monday, where the former expressed concern over the arrests of Muslim youth in connection with their possible involvement with the Islamic State or Daesh.

A statement from Maulana Syed Ahmad Bukhari’s office said that community members had been concerned over these arrests and that “there should be transparency in carrying out such detentions and the nation should be made aware of the nature of the alleged terrorist activities so that one may construe how substantial the charges were.”

“Special care must be taken that lives of innocent youth and their families are not ruined,” the statement added.

Mr. Modi had promised to look into these issues and not condone anything that would jeopardise communal harmony in the country, it added.
