Relatively subdued temperatures for a second day on Monday gave relief to most parts of north India even as the plains of Uttar Pradesh reeled under a heat wave.
In the capital, temperature continued to hover close to 35 degree Celsius for the second day running on Monday as partly cloudy sky and light showers in the evening kept the mercury in check. Delhi received 0.7 mm rain between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m.
The Meteorological department has forecast similar weather for Tuesday with possibility of rain and thunderstorms.
Light to moderate rains in parts of Punjab and Haryana led to a drop in temperature in the two States. Chandigarh recorded a maximum of 32 degrees Celsius, seven below the normal level, a local MeT department report said. In Ambala, the maximum was 29.8 degrees Celsius, eight notches below normal.
However, Uttar Pradesh continued to reel under a scorching heat wave. Allahabad recorded a maximum of 43.5 degrees Celsius, Lucknow 42.5 degrees Celsius and Varanasi sizzled at 42.5 degrees Celsius.
Basti was hottest in the State recording maximum temperature at 44 degrees Celsius.
Parts of Rajasthan also received light to moderate rains which brought down the day temperatures. Kota was the hottest place in the State with a maximum of 40.1 degrees Celsius.
Barmer, Chittogarh and Jaisalmer recorded 38.8, 38.6 and 37.1 degrees Celsius respectively.
