The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday urged the Uttar Pradesh government to rehabilitate nine innocent youths who were jailed on terrorism charges, but acquitted by the court and are now jobless.
General secretary Prakash Karat led a party delegation to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav here and submitted a memorandum, detailing the cases against the youths, who spent two to nine years in jail, and the “gross injustice” done to them by the administration and the police.
The memorandum, signed by Mr. Karat, party State committee secretary S.P. Kashyap and State Secretariat member Subhashini Ali, urged the government to formulate a policy for the benefit of “such innocent persons,” and to give the nine youths jobs, commensurate with their capability, besides compensation.
Ms. Ali, who accompanied Mr. Karat, said Mr. Akhilesh Yadav promised to consider the demands sympathetically.
Waasif Haider, Ghulam Jeelani, Mohammad Zubair, Mumtaz Ahmed, Abdul Mobeen, Bilal Ahmed, Gulzar Ahmed Wani, Shafa’at Rasul and Haji Ateeq were arrested from different parts of the State, the memorandum said. Except Bilal Ahmed and Gulzar Ahmed Wani, who are from Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district, all others belong to Kanpur, Siddhartnagar and Kaushambi districts of Uttar Pradesh.
