Registration process of land earmarked for ‘Gopalpur Industrial Park’ SEZ project in Ganjam district of Odisha to the name of Tata Steel would start soon.

Industrial Development Corporation (IDCO) of Odisha in the past had acquired 2,970 acres of land near Gopalpur port in Ganjam district for a mega steel plant project of Tata Steel. Later steel plant project had been shelved and the company had decided to have a SEZ on the land.

Till now the company did not have the land registered in its name. According to sources this land registration process will start soon and it will provide scope to the company to sub-lease land patches from it to other industrial units interested in establishing their units in the proposed ‘Gopalpur Industrial Park’. In the first phase, a portion of total land with the IDCO would be registered in the name of Tata Steel and rest of the land would go to possession of Tata Steel in phased manner.

Meanwhile, work is on for a ferrochrome plant that would come up on around 400 acres of this proposed SEZ land. Earlier it was envisioned that this 55,000 Tons Per Annum (TPA) ferrochrome plant being set up at a cost of Rs.800 crore would start production from July 2015. Now its inception is delayed till next year.

Threat of cyclonic storms on Ganjam district coast of Odisha had compelled Tata Steel to change the design of its proposed ferrochrome plant coming up in the region, which has caused this delay.
