A gang rape victim from Rayagada of Odisha, died of multiple complications on Tuesday in a corporate hospital here. She had been admitted in a critical condition on January 7, after she attempted self-immolation.

The 16-year-old girl was on ventilator support. “Her condition worsened on Monday and she died at 3.45 p.m. on Tuesday,” a spokesman of CARE Hospital said. Her body was shifted to the King George Hospital for post-mortem.

The girl, an orphan, was abducted by four youths at Rayagada on January 2 when she was returning home from work and raped. All the accused have been arrested by the Rayagada Police and the Odisha government has promised to conduct the trial by a fast-track court.

Unable to bear the trauma and humiliation, the girl first consumed sleeping pills in an attempt to end her life. As it failed, she set herself on fire.

A doctor, who attended on her, said she developed infection leading to multi-organ failure despite their attempts to save her life, he said.
