The Central University of Rajasthan has installed a 500 MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer and becomes the only University in the State to have this facility.

Procured at an approximate cost of Rs. 5 crore, the equipment has been installed in the Department of Chemistry, School of Chemical Sciences & Pharmacy. The instrument mainly consists of a high power magnet, different probes for recording NMR of dozens of nuclei and console for transmission of data.

Vice-Chancellor of Central University of Rajasthan Prof. A. P. Singh said he was confident that this instrument will go long way in providing a big boost to the research and teaching at University in particular and in Rajasthan in general. Prof. Singh said that the University would very soon make this facility open to other public and private funded institutes, universities and companies on payment basis.

According to the Dean, School of Chemical Sciences & Pharmacy Prof. R.T. Pardasani the instrument will be utilized for the identification and analysis of simple to complex molecules such as natural products, pharmaceuticals and nanomaterial.

Currently, the instrument is being used for research by several faculty members in the Science Departments at the University. The University has deputed several faculty members, technical assistants, and research scholars to undertake the maintenance and operation of the instrument.

There are several institutions in the country that use common facilities and the rational behind it is that not every institution needs o duplicate such large investments. Common centres also help in making research more collaborative.

As forerunners to this concept, India has established Inter-University Centre under the University Grants Commission – the Nuclear Accelerator Centre at Delhi, the Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Pune and INFLIBET at Ahmedabad to name a few.
