Rains bring cheer in Garhwal region

December 22, 2013 11:13 pm | Updated 11:13 pm IST - DEHRA DUN:

Light rains over Garhwal region and the season’s first snow in Dhanaulti near Mussoorie and Chakrata on Sunday brought cheers to farmers who could expect a good crop now.

“The winter rains were delayed this year and could have had an adverse impact on crops had it not rained now,” said a cheerful Virendra Rawat who is a progressive farmer in Barkot.

The light showers and snow have pulled down temperatures forcing people to stay indoors.

Small groups could be seen sitting around bonfires in Dehra Dun, Tehri and Mussoorie.

The maximum temperature in Dehra Dun city on Sunday was 12.2 degrees Celsius that was eight degrees Celsius below normal. The weather might clear up on Monday, the State Meteorological Centre here said.

Tourists could be seen rushing towards Dhanaulti and Chakrata since morning and roadside stalls offering hot tea, samosas and other snacks saw brisk business.
