Union minister Mukul Roy’s son Subhrangsu Roy, who is absconding after being booked on charges of assaulting EC officials, can contest the upcoming polls unless he was proved a convict, a top West Bengal electoral officer said today.

“Raids have been continuing under SP and ASP of the North 24-Paraganas district to trace him,” Sunil Kumar Gupta told reporters.

To a query, he said that Mr. Roy would be able to contest the polls unless he was proved a convict. Mr. Roy is the Trinamool Congress candidate from Bijpur.

The Election Commission on Tuesday had filed an FIR at Bijpur police station against Roy and 10 others on the charge of assaulting members of a team appointed by the election authority when it went there to erase wall writings on public and private buildings.

The EC later suspended inspector in-charge Partha Pratim Roy for failing to arrest the offender.
