Rahul likely to visit Bihar this week

May 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - PATNA:

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi is likely to visit Bihar next week to meet the earthquake victims and see the relief operations in camps at Raxaul in East Chamaparan district, bordering Nepal.

He was expected to be in the State on Saturday, but the visit was deferred. “Now we’re finalising his visit either for Tuesday or Thursday… He may visit Raxaul and the relief camps…,” a Congress leader told The Hindu .

Mr. Gandhi’s first visit to Bihar, after the Lok Sabha elections, is significant because the Assembly polls are due in October-November.

Another Congress leader said Mr. Gandhi might also visit some other areas in border districts to meet the victims of the thunderstorm that killed 48 people.

“Both Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the BJP have already been pushing hard to score over each other by delivering relief and meeting those suffered in last two natural calamities hitting the State. So, its important that the Congress leader too should mark his presence felt”, political commentator N K Chaudhury told The Hindu .
