The Uttar Pradesh police on Friday denied Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi permission to visit Saharanpur district, which has been seething under bouts of caste violence .

Mr. Gandhi was scheduled to visit on Saturday.

SSP Saharanpur "informed that Sri Rahul Gandhi has not been given permission to visit Saharanpur," UP Police spokesperson Rahul Srivastava said.

More details are awaited.

Politicising the issue

The BJP accused the Congress leader of trying to politicise the recent violence in the West UP district.

"Peace was restored in Saharanpur but the situation worsened after Mayawati's visit. Now tragedy tourist Rahul Gandhi is preparing to visit," said UP cabinet minister Shrikant Sharma.

Mr. Sharma said there was "a conspiracy" against the Yogi government to cause disorder in West UP. "An attempt is being made to instigate the youth," he said.
