Punjab Cabinet on Monday gave its nod for introduction of Right to Service Bill in the Assembly which aims at time-bound delivery of public services to the people of the State.
A decision to this effect was taken here at a cabinet meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, an official spokesman said.
He said the legislation would go a long way to weed out inefficiency at the grass roots level and to ensure transparency and accountability in the system.
Under Right to Service Act, time bound delivery of 67 citizen-centric services to the public as a matter of right would be ensured besides a provision for punishing civil servants in case they failed to comply with the prescribed timeframe.
The Cabinet also approved the setting up of Guru Kashi University at Talwandi Sabo, besides a new Directorate of Education in the department of Rural Development & Panchayats.
A proposal was also cleared for requisite staff to make it functional.
The Cabinet also approved creation of Dirba in Sangrur district as a new Development Block comprising 44 village panchayats, of which 42 have been carved out from Sunam and 2 from Lehragagga.
The new development block would have a total population of 99,177 and an area of 1,11,821 acres.
With this, the total number of blocks in the State has gone up to 143.
