To start with complaints would be received through SMS from the public in Mahe region whenever crimes occurred.

Slowly this SMS mode of information to the police about crimes and other incidents would be extended to other three regions — Puducherry,Karaikal and Yanam — Puducherry Home and Health Minister E. Valsaraj told reporters here today.

As many as 2,000 more policemen were needed and steps had been initiated to strengthen the force in a phased manner, he said, adding, Union Home Ministry was apprised of the requirement.

He said that law and order was being maintained adequately here and the rate of crime had come down during this year as against the crimes witnessed in the previous year. He could not furnish the details but said among the small states Puducherry had established a record of sound law and order.

Mr. Valsaraj said that the Bill passed in Puducherry Assembly to bring in Goondas Act is being perused by the Union Law Ministry.
