The Puducherry government on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court to direct Karnataka to release at least 1,000 cusecs, in addition to 9,000 cusecs ordered to be released to Tamil Nadu, till the onset of northeast monsoon in the Karaikal region.

In its application, Puducherry said the Cauvery River Authority, headed by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, at its meeting on September 19 had directed Karnataka to release 9,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu till October 15. Even though it was implied that at least three percent of water Tamil Nadu was receiving from Karnataka was the share of Puducherry, no specific direction was given by the CRA in this regard.

The applicant was constrained to file this petition for a direction to Karnataka to release an additional 1,000 cusecs of water per day urgently so as to reach Karaikal region of Puducherry to enable farmers to salvage standing samba crop on 27,000 acres of land at the tailend of the Cauvery.

It also wanted Tamil Nadu to receive this additional quantity of water at Mettur dam and release it to Karaikal region according to the requirements of farmers.
