Works for the beach beautification project are on in full swing along the beach promenade. The Public Works Department (PWD) has started to lay granite slabs on the pavements.
An official of the department said that in the first phase of the project, the pavements would be beautified. The project has been taken up under the Centrally-sponsored scheme and funds sanctioned for the Tourism Department.
“We are laying three-cm thick flamed granite slabs on both sides of Beach Road from Children’s Park to Kargil Memorial. There will be granite benches on the pavements. We are also creating squares for shrubs. Electrical posts will come up on the pavements,” the official said.
With INTACH being the consultant for the project, pergolas with four-stone pillars and teakwood rafter on top have been planned on the eastern pavement alone. “These will be like shelters along the pavement. There will be two to three pergolas on the stretch,” the official said.
The department is planning to expedite the works on the promenade.
Union Minister for Housing, Urban Poverty Alleviation and Tourism Kumari Selja recently laid the stone for the project.
