Separatist Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front chief Yasin Malik was re-arrested on Saturday after nine days of detention in Srinagar, sparking violent protests.
Mr. Malik, who was released on Friday night after his detention on May 25, was again arrested after he held a roadside press conference. His arrest triggered protests in Maisuma area.
Security forces used tear-smoke shells to disperse the stone-throwing protesters.
“I am being targeted by India and its stooges because I started a unification campaign between Hurriyat factions and the JKLF. It is a revengeful campaign against me,” said Mr. Malik.
He warned that “plots like construction of settlement colonies for Pandits, separate colonies for Sainiks, industrial policy and terrorising Jammu Muslims will be opposed tooth and nail”.
Mr. Malik claimed that during his detention he was threatened “to face five years in jail for his activities”.
A JKLF spokesman alleged the police’s Saturday raid was “an act of hooliganism”.
