Protesting against what they called an “attack” on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee outside Yojana Bhawan in New Delhi on Tuesday by the Students Federation of India activists, a group of persons carrying flags of the student wing of the Trinamool Congress went on the rampage at Presidency University here on Wednesday.
They stormed through the gates of the University breaking the lock, attacked students in the campus and ransacked the historic Bakers Laboratory housed in a heritage building of 195-year-old institution. Glass panes were broken and bricks that used in the attack lay strewn around inside the premises.
Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Malabika Sarkar later said the “unprovoked attack on peaceful students within the campus” needed to be “condemned a hundred times.”
Expressing surprise that the police deployed at the gate did not take any action to prevent the incident Prof Sarkar said, “the police inaction was unacceptable.”
“I saw that some people holding the flags of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad broke open the gates and started attacking the students,” she told journalists.
Prof. Sarkar said that she had called the office of the Chancellor of the University, Governor M. K. Narayanan and informed it about the incident.
“Not even a single person among them [responsible for the violence] was a student of the university,” she said.
