Prosecution evidence concludes in Uber taxi rape case

February 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Prosecution evidence in the Uber rape case concluded on Saturday. Wrapping up the evidence within a fortnight, Additional Sessions Judge Kaveri Baweja fixed February 3 as the date for recording of statement of accused Shiv Kumar Yadav during which he will be given an opportunity to defend the allegations levelled against him.

The recording of evidence had begun on January 15. The prosecution examined a total of 28 witnesses, including the victim, his friend, fingerprints and forensic experts, and the investigating officer of the case. The victim identified the accused during her evidence in the court. Earlier, she had identified him on the Tis Hazari Courts premises when she had gone there to record her statement. The accused had earlier refused to undergo the test identification parade, taking the plea that the victim would identify him as she had seen his photograph on the Uber website.

The fingerprints expert said that the finger and palm prints of the victim matched with the ones lifted from the taxi which she had hired to reach home on December 5 last year. The forensic expert said that the DNA of the samples lifted from the Uber cab in which the victim was allegedly raped matched with the DNA of the victim as well as the accused.

Among other things, blood stains and hair had been lifted from the cab for the forensic examination.
