Priyanka Vadra concluded her two-day visit to the UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s constituency, Rae Bareli, after conducting a meeting with the chairmen of gram sabhas and party workers at the Bhuemau Guest House on Tuesday.

Ms. Vadra who is overseeing the organisational work being undertaken by the party in Rae Bareli and Amethi, later left for New Delhi.

Congress sources said a large number of party workers– drawn mostly from the gram panchayats and rural areas– attended the meeting, not open to any one else. Only a few people including K.L Sharma, Ms. Gandhi’s representative in Rae Bareli, were present at the meeting. No local Congress leader of the district was allowed entry.

“The chairmen of gram sabhas were assigned new tasks by Ms. Vadra,” an informed source told The Hindu . He added that Ms. Vadra could not meet them when they were elected; hence the meeting was held on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, Ms. Vadra inaugurated a block development office in Salon before attending the workers meeting.

Arriving on Monday, Ms. Vadra first interacted with villagers of different Assembly segments of the Rae Bareli parliamentary constituency, and sought feedback on the implementation of the Central schemes, particularly the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MNREGA) scheme.

Ms. Gandhi’s first stop was Ghurai village in Khiro block. She asked the chairmen of gram sabhas about the implementation of the MNREGA, Indira Awas Yojana, and the availability of water and electricity. She was apprised of the incessant power cuts and absence of electricity for most part of the day, as well as the supply of polluted potable water.

Ms. Vadra also spent time with villagers in the Khiro block, Congress sources said.

On Monday, Ms. Vadra also met the villagers of Saguni, Hardi, Khushti and Chak Gajraj Kherha and asked for information about the progress of the Centre’s programmes in the district.

She also inaugurated a solar plant at Mithunkheda village, built at a cost of Rs. 17 lakh.

Ms. Vadra’s whistle-stop tour of the district was unannounced. As per the original schedule she was to reach the Bhuemau Guest House on her arrival in the constituency.
