Prithviraj Chavan, who met Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday and party vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday, will continue as Maharashtra Chief Minister and lead the party in the Assembly elections due shortly in the State.
Ending the suspense over whether Mr. Chavan would be replaced ahead of the elections, party general secretary in-charge of the State Mohan Prakash told The Hindu : “Mr. Chavan will continue as Maharashtra Chief Minister and the coming Assembly elections will be fought under his leadership.”
Mr. Chavan, who met not just the Gandhis, but also several senior party functionaries — including Ahmed Patel, Motilal Vora and Janardan Dwivedi — on this trip was, however, coy on the issue when he met journalists at Maharashtra Sadan here.
“I had one on one meetings with Ms. Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi to discuss the political situation — I can’t discuss the details.”
